Out of Nazareth
Marion Zimmer Bradley
They've asked me if I knew the preacher then;
I knew his father, yes, and all his kin;
They were all just hard-working local men
Like all the rest -- how do such yarns begin?
He read in Synagogue and had a way
Of telling little stories with a touch
That made the old Commandments new each day;
And yet, round here, he never seemed like much.
I only heard good sense in what he said,
And that he was, like his old mother, kind.
Since then, they say, the fellow's raised the dead,
Changed water into wine, and cured the blind--
The sort of rubbish folks will always say.
I just remember how he preached that day.
